OPEN TO ANYONE WHO MAY PLAUSIBLY BE AT THE CULLEN HOUSE
Lily lay across the sumptuous leather couch in the corner of the living room, absent-mindedly kicking her feet together, her Converse abandoned on the floor, as she flipped through the pages of a back-copy of some huge tome of a fashion magazine she'd found crumpled in the dark space behind the books crammed onto the nearest shelf. It was full of fancy dresses and tiaras, jewellery that would have reduced a fairytale princess to tears at the inadequacy of her own attire. It was just the sort of thing to pass a mindless hour or so, in that interminably boring time before most of her siblings returned from school.
The very sight of the diamonds swirling on the ages before her was entrancing. It was a shame that she had no legitimate excuse to buy some. She would buy some without an excuse, but she couldn't wear them. Even if she would choose to wear them herself, for no reason, she wouldn't get out of the door draped in such obvious money wasting. Strings of diamonds, however slim, were hardly inconspicuous in such a small town.
Lily flicked a few pages over, to rid her mind of the jewellery, and pushed up onto her elbows, digging creases in the leather beneath her. Her jeans squeaked on the freshly cleaned material, and she giggled guiltily. No mark, no harm done. But the sound masked something else, someone's gentle footsteps outside. She had thought everybody was occupied already. Obviously not. At least a visit from someone in her family, anyone, would break the monotony of waiting for the usual cacophony that broke out as soon as her siblings fell through the door.
